Regarding Mounjaro, and other Weight Loss Injections
Following recent national news output stating that weight-loss injections are available through GP practices, many patients have already been in touch. Although the NHS guidance has changed, it is the local ICB (West Yorkshire) that are responsible for ensuring this service provision is resourced. Currently, there are no resources allocated for GPs to provide this service, or for the necessary monitoring. Therefore, the latest advice from the ICB is that all patients who meet the criteria should be referred to the specialist clinic. As of March 2026, the WY ICB criteria are currently as follows:
- Over 18
- Registered at General Practice within Leeds ICB
- a BMI of 40kg/m2 or more or 37.5kg/m2 for ethnic monitories
- AND any 4 out of the 5 obesity related comorbidities:
- Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (CVD, IHD, PVD, heart failure)
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Dyslipidaemia ((Treated with Lipid lowering medication OR with LDL ≥ 4.1 mmol/L or HDL-C <1 in men OR <1.3 mmol/L in women OR fasted Triglycerides 1.7≥ mmol/L)
- Obstructive sleep Apnoea on CPAP
- Hypertension on anti-hypertensive medication
The ICB (West Yorkshire) are likely to make incremental changes to this and you may wish to check on ICB/NHS websites to see if there are more up-to-date details available.
For further information on the service, go to: Weight management – Leeds Community Healthcare
If you would like to raise a concern about being unable to receive this treatment from your GP, please contact the ICB at: https://www.westyorkshire.icb.nhs.uk/contact/comments-concerns-complaints
We hope that very soon, new treatments such as these will be adequately supported to allow us to provide them in-house safely.
Kind regards,
The Allerton & Westfield team
