October is breast cancer awareness month! This month we would like to remind our patients of the importance of self-checking. We encourage you to look, touch and feel your chest at least once a month. Everyone has breast tissue so everyone should be checking.
There is no right or wrong way to check but make sure you check your breasts/pecs, up to your collarbone, round by your armpit and to the top of your ribcage.
If you notice any changes that seem unusual to you, get in touch with the practice.
Signs are often due to other non-cancerous issues, but it is always best to get checked.
Changes can include:
- Thick area.
- Dimpling.
- Nipple crust.
- Red/hot.
- Unexplained fluid.
- Skin sores.
- Lumps
- Growing vein.
- Sunken nipple.
- New size/shape.
- Bumps.
- ‘Orange peel’ skin.
